Sherry Wang 汪思廷
I work with natural materials as the primary medium and do natural dyeing, pigment-making, tree bark cloth making, weaving, embroidery and handmade paper.
My art practices take seriously the processes of 'making' that involve vigorous bodily engagement, including searching, gathering, grinding and so on, with the environment and materials. The production labour is considered a crucial part of my art works. I am interested in the themes of the entanglement between nature, people, place, memory and culture.
About my practice and interests I am interested in how to combine "local plants" with "local events/story" with a focus on turning the time axis of the past and the present, connecting the elapsed time, and understanding the various possibilities of the past, present and future. In my current ongoing project, "Strike Trilogy", as an example, the theme includes strike action in three different time and space backgrounds. Taking my physical labour as a start point, I walked up the mountain from the city to complete The Radical Road (one of the strike stories took place), collect some local soil, and bring it back to grind and make into oil paint. Through this series of actions, I made these three stories into conversations. My other project, “Xenogeneic Species Across Time and Space: Kandelia”, talks about one British botanical collector Oldham Richard who arrived in Taiwan to collect the ‘native Taiwanese Kandelia’. However, contemporary Kandelia in Taiwan is the foreign species re-introduced after the native species were extinct. The specimens of ‘native Taiwanese Kandelia’ are now kept in the Kew Gardens of the Royal Botanic Gardens in the United Kingdom. I also found the handwritten letters of Oldham Richard describing the rough sea conditions that he experienced when travelling to Taiwan on a boat and Taiwan in his eyes. The letters are very precious and interesting historical materials. Therefore, I collected the existing ‘foreign species’ of Kandelia buds that now live in Taiwan made into paint and drew the Taiwan ‘native species’ of Kandelia now kept by Kew Gardens; thus, interlace time and space, and weave plants, people, and places.
